Oops… How do I manage my expenses? Please help me!!!

Posted by Hima on August 24, 2009

Tom sat down after a long tiring day of shopping and spending, just spending. Now he thinks this is the end of the month and let me have a look at my expenses that I did for the month. Tom says ”Hmmmm… I haven’t done this for a real long time.” He opens his several bank accounts online and is trying really hard to list out the expenses from day one for the current month. Tom could really see there are so many minor spending that has happened every day using several money cards (Credit Card & Debit Card). Tom is writing down the expenses starting from the first of the month. When he reaches 10th day of the month, he is really frustrated and confused because of few reasons:

  • There are too many spending in a day which is very overwhelming to pen down.
  • Tom is not able to keep track of the several cards he is using for the spending.

What do we mean by minor spending here? Let us consider a typical day for Tom. Tom wakes up in the morning and starts to work. On the way to work, Tom wants a refreshing hot coffee. Tom stops at a Brand X coffee shop and buys a Regular Coffee which would be $3.00, heads to work and buys a sandwich for $3.99 for his breakfast. Now after a while comes the lunch time. Tom spends around $5.00 for his lunch. Tom handles his daily tasks at work and here comes the evening break and again has a Coffee for $3.00.

Job Done! Tom gets a call from his spouse to buy groceries on the way. Tom heads to the grocery store near his home and purchases grocery for the week for $50.00. Is about to leave and checks the gas tank needs to be filled. Here you go, Tom pulls into a gas station and fills the tank for $50.00. The total spending for a typical day for Tom is 114.99. Granted, Tom does not spend every day for gas and groceries, but the point is not that. Does Tom keep track of the expense he made for the day?

Sometimes the little things in life are the ones which create a major difference. Little drops make a mighty ocean.

  • What if someone keeps monitoring me of my expenses?
  • What if I dint have to do much to keep track of the expenses every month but still able to stay in my budget?
  • What if everyday someone says I have spent so much and I have only so much balance left in my account for the month?

ZAPPER does it all. All you have to do is:

Set a monthly goal for the so called minor spending like Groceries (GRO), Eating Out (EAT), Parties & Weekends (PW), Friends and Family (FF), Miscellaneous (MIS).

Whenver you spend, just text us to 312-469-9600 with the command placed in the brackets. Eg. Your goal for GROCERIES for the month August is $200. On 5th of August you spend for groceries. Immediately you send a TEXT like GRO $25.00 *Walmart*.

ZAPPER sends you the balance based on the goal set. ZAPPER sends GRO $175.00 / $200.00. ($175.00 – Balance amount for the month; $200.00 – Goal set for the month of August). As simple as that. We track your expenses and help you.

Some tips on how to use Zapper

Posted by Hima on July 21, 2009

1) Send sms to 312 469 9600 with just the word “help” in the message. Zapper will lead you step-by-step from there on.
2) Just get started. Sign up immediately for free trial. Either use default goals for GRO, EAT, MIS and GAS (I used only these 4 categories) or set some goals. Send an expense “GAS 0.00″ for starters
3) I found it very useful to have comments in the next line:
GAS 35
* filled Gas at BP gas station intersection of main and woodward, julietville
4) I found the reminders useful. I always pay attention to each reminder. I think for a quick second, “are there expenses that I have not yet zapped?” If I havent, I do so immediately. I doubt if I have missed even a single expense since I started Zapping. The funny thing is this: when I started my reasoning was that I never tracked expenses before. Even if I track half of what I am spending, I am ahead of where I was before :)
5) I found the monthly pdf very useful. Mostly to know how much I spent in each category. Any places I can cut down. And then set more realistic spending goals for next months
6) So I tell folks to just set any goals to begin with and then modify them monthly to fine-tune
